Milestones

2005: International Forum on Remittances held in Washington, D.C. (USA). Focus on remittance flows in Latin America and the Caribbean.

2007: International Forum on Remittances held in Washington, D.C. (USA). Focus on global issued related to remittance, migration and development.

2009: Global Forum on Remittances held in Tunis (Tunisia). Highlights on flows to and from Africa.

2013: Global Forum on Remittances held in Bangkok (Thailand). Highlights on flows to and from Asia and the Pacific. The idea of establishing an International Day of Family Remittances (IDFR) was conceived by one of the private sector representatives.

2015: Global Forum on Remittances and Development held in Milan (Italy) within the context of EXPO Milano 2015. The IDFR was observed for the first time, with the participation of H.M. Queen Máxima of the Netherlands in Her capacity of UNSGSA.

2017: Global Forum on Remittances, Investment and Development held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, N.Y. (USA). It saw the participation of United Nations Member States and key private sector representatives.

2018: Global Forum on Remittances, Investment and Development, with a focus on Asia-Pacific, held in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). In December, UN Member States adopted the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM), the first, inter-governmentally negotiated agreement covering all aspects of international migration in a holistic and comprehensive manner. Objective 20 of the GCM includes the GFRID as actionable tool for its implementation.

2021: Virtual Global Forum on Remittances, Investment and Development, with a focus on recovery and resilience through greater digital and financial inclusion in light of the COVID-19 crisis.

2023: GFRID Summit held at the UN Office at Nairobi (Kenya) focused on opportunities and challenges in the African remittance marketplace. Over 650 delegates from the continent and abroad actively engaged in the three-day discussions.

UN Resolution
With Resolution A/RES/70/1, the UN General Assembly sets the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a collection of 17 global goals designed to be a "blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all". Goal 10c is specifically dedicated to remittances: “By 2030, reduce to less than 3 per cent the transaction costs of migrant remittances and eliminate remittance corridors with costs higher than 5 per cent”.

GFRID Summit 2018
